Show Notes:

I took several trips, including three camping trips, one to Schlitterbahn (world’s biggest waterpark) Lena, Illinois by way of Chicago – TWICE, and Houston on at least three occasions. I was busy and thus the reason for few podcasts.

Is it possible to have too many things going on? I talk about four major areas of life:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Mental
  • Spiritual
Today I talk about a subcategory of the above, career.  I discuss how I found my purpose in teaching.  Teaching is tough in today’s climate with testing and apathy.  How do you stand out?  I found a different job, but didn’t take it in the end, find out why. Part of the reason is to become good or excellent at what I do.  To do that, time is needed and you can’t do everything.  I discovered three reasons why focusing in on the few things in life help make you better:
  • More Time
  • Less Stress
  • Renewed Interest
I am trying to find connection in all things in my life so that I can focus on my purpose.  I have tied my life together so I can be more effective in all areas of my life.  One area I want more focus on is church and my job there.  Spoke today with our pastor about modernists and post moderns, interesting discussion.
We also talk about the modernists/post-modernists and how they are affected and how they effect the places they work and participate it. e.g. the church and our educational institutions.  It is difficult to work in these environments in today’s world. Todd has a heart for ministry and can help you if you are in the ministry.  Fill out this form and let’s get started.
Lastly, check out my personal blog,, where I am blogging through my school year.

Without a doubt my worst job was as a car salesman. Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t as bad as some other jobs I have had in regards to physicality. But it was such a bad fit for me. Why? Because it went against all of my core beliefs and core of who I was. Not all car dealers run their stores the way this one did, but many did and this is why car salesman have a bad reputation to this day.

I was told that I knew the customer was lying if I could see their lips moving. Ironically, the same is said for car salesman, which of course leads to an adversarial relationship. I hated the idea of not being truthful. I was told, “This is how it is done” so I was supposed to go along with it. I didn’t and the result was I sold one ar in thirty days which led to my rather abrupt departure from my career as a car salesman. I awoke one morning and announced to Melissa, “I am retiring from the car business today” Continue Reading…

My all time favorite job I ever had was as a baseball umpire.  I spent ten years in professional baseball as an umpire.  If you have listened to Podcast #2 you heard all about it.  Check it out if you haven’t listened to it yet and be sure to leave a comment if you have some time.

I started umpiring when I was  just a young lad.  The umpires didn’t show up to one of Continue Reading…

My First Job

I can’t remember if my first job was as a telephone marketer or a construction worker.  I wasn’t very good at either, but both taught me lessons for life, one of which was I didn’t want to do either with rest of my life!

My dad got me a job as a “helper” on a construction crew that was redoing an office in the office building where he worked.  I don’t remember very much, except that I was supposed to do some trim painting around a register that was surrounded by paneling (I know,  so 70’s, wait it was the 70’s) and I got more paint on the paneling than on the register.  Continue Reading…

The Jobs I Have Had

Recently I have been thinking about what would be the best fit for me to spend my time doing.  I currently teach at a Junior High school and am transitioning out of that and into something else.  The something else will more likely be temporary (3 years) and will lead to something else (hint: like Purposeful U).

So as I look forward to the future, I cast one eye backward at my past.  Continue Reading…

Recently the big winner, or winners, of the latest Powerball jackpot were announced.  I heard there were three groups of winners.  The last group was near and dear to my heart as they were professional educators, teachers and administrators.  This last group didn’t want to be recognized, they preferred to be anonymous.  I think I would do it that way too, I mean why invite all the scrutiny and I’m sure my long-lost cousins would come from everywhere, so stay in the shadows.
