Oftentimes we are looking for a fresh start, a new outlook on life, a new direction or a new purpose. If you are a Christian then you have probably heard of Lent. What is Lent? Lent is a 40 day spiritual journey reminiscent of the journey that Jesus took in his 40 days in the wilderness. We commerate that, sort of, by using this forty day time, minus Sundays, to fast and live more simply.
You will remember that Jesus went into the wilderness after being baptized, he ate or drank nothing for 40 days to strengthen himself for the upcoming trial by satan, and for his ministry that was soon to follow.
I look forward to Lent, it is a time to live more simply and fast from something and add something in its place. By fasting we can take that time and focus on our spiritual disciplines, like Bible reading, prayer, worship, giving, and service to others. I love this time. Need some ideas of what to give up? Here are a few:
- Video Games
- Gossip (Good all the time)
What a great time to be reflective and discover your purpose. The time you would normally use in the above activites could be put to use for discovering your purpose and growing. Just an idea.
Why not give it a try, even if you are not “religious” you can certainly use the discipline for your own introspection and growth. Who knows, you might even discover your true purpose in this life.
Here is resource to help you during Lent.
