Lent – A New Start

February 12, 2013 — Leave a comment

lentagain-largeOftentimes we are looking for a fresh start, a new outlook on life, a new direction or a new purpose.  If you are a Christian then you have probably heard of Lent.  What is Lent?  Lent is a 40 day spiritual journey reminiscent of the journey that Jesus took in his 40 days in the wilderness.  We commerate that, sort of, by using this forty day time, minus Sundays, to fast and live more simply.

You will remember that Jesus went into the wilderness after being baptized, he ate or drank nothing for 40 days to strengthen himself for the upcoming trial by satan, and for his ministry that was soon to follow.

I look forward to Lent, it is a time to live more simply and fast from something and add something in its place.  By fasting we can take that time and focus on our spiritual disciplines, like Bible reading, prayer, worship, giving, and service to others.  I love this time.  Need some ideas of what to give up?  Here are a few:

  • Coffee
  • Soda
  • Alcohol
  • TV
  • Video Games
  • Meat
  • Sweets
  • Movies
  • Internet
  • Phone
  • Gossip (Good all the time)

What a great time to be reflective and discover your purpose.  The time you would normally use in the above activites could be put to use for discovering your purpose and growing.  Just an idea.

Why not give it a try, even if you are not “religious” you can certainly use the discipline for your own introspection and growth.  Who knows, you might even discover your true purpose in this life.

Here is resource to help you during Lent.

Today we talk about a few items, including, my running, my early rising plan, a diet we are on called Wheat Belly, my good friend Don Wharton came to town, I was able to preach at church today and today is NFL conference championship Sunday and I have no team to root for.  Plus I am writing a book each morning and reading a couple by Vince Flynn and the 100 Dollar start up.  And of course, we talk about some movies: Dr. No, Taken 2 and Gangster Squad.

Baseball lost two greats, Earl Weaver and Stan “The Man” Musial.  Both will be missed.  I have a video link below to an argument featuring Earl and umpire Bill Haller, no young kids should watch this!  Bad language!

So sit back and relax or take you iphone and go for a run and listen to me for the next 45 minutes.

New to Purposeful U?  Then make sure you listen to My Story, the first podcast I produced, and head on over to my personal blog, Todd B. Freese and over to the podcast that my wife and I do weekly, Two Teachers in Texas.  Be sure to leave a comment on both blogs and of course here as well.

Radical: The Book

October 24, 2012 — Leave a comment

radical_currentI have just finished the book, Radical.  I am a Christian who takes my faith seriously, or do I.  After reading the book I was surprised at how much I need to change.  First of all I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to go further in their faith. I have long been concerned about how easy we make Christianity.   Come up front, say a prayer and that’s it, your in.  I know that Ephesians 2:8-9 are true, but that is just the beginning.  I have been dubious of this desire of so many our churches to take skins, number saved.

David Platt is the author who also pastors a meagchurch in Birmingham, Alabama.  He chronicles some of his own struggles with pastoring a large church and doing so in the American culture.  He makes some excellent points as it relates to church and the American dream.  Bigger, better and more is the American way.  But is it the Biblical way?  He answers with an emphatic no.

Along the way he offers an antidote to the American church experience, what he calls the Radical Experiment.  A five pronged approach to a year long commitment.

  • To pray for the entire world
  • To read through the entire Word
  • To commit our lives to multiplying community
  • To sacrifice our money for a specific purpose
  • To give our time in another context

I have challenged some of my youth to take it, and they have agreed.  I pray we all follow through.  If you want to jump start your faith, please read the book and follow through.

We are beginning this Wednesday.  I recommend the book highly, read it and leave a comment.
