My big day is upon me.  Tomorrow I will run my first half-marathon.  Which is one of the reasons I haven’t podcasted very much or posted very much in the last few weeks.  I have been training for this event.  I have run the miles that I need to run to be able to run tomorrow and meet the goal I have set.

I have discovered that training for a marathon is a metaphor for success in life.  Life is about training in many ways, often when you don’t even realize it.  You are training when you are in school for your life.  Many of us didn’t realize at the time, but ever though we didn’t think we would use algebra later in life, we would use the discipline it would take to pass our class in real life.  In life we need the discipline of homework (doing the work), the tests (to check and see how we are doing) and the report cards (accountability) to keep us moving forward.

I have been thinking about these things as I have been running.  Why am I training?  Why can’t I just show up and do it? The answer is obvious to those who run.  We would die!  And so it is with much of life, we need to train ourselves to be successful later in our lives.  I need to do my miles on those afternoons when I don’t want to run.  I need to do my miles on those mornings when it would be better to remain in bed.  But still I trudge on becasue I know I won’t be ready if I don’t.

Training for my half has taught me much in dedication and passion.  Without both, you won’t have stomach to see it through.  And without purpose the dedication and passion will fall short too.  I am running with the purpose to finish under two hours to see if I can.  Why?  Because I am dedicated to health, to being there for my family later in life and to see if I still have what it takes.

I will let you know if i reached my goal of under two hours.  But no matter what, I have succeeded by doing the work and showing up each day, with purpose.  Talk with you later, until then, peace.

This week on Purposefulu:

We are heading in a new direction here at Purposefulu.  A little shorter length and fewer segments.

Happy Thanksgiving to you!  We are hosting Thanksgiving again this year and Todd is up early to Smoke a turkey, bake a pie and make homemade rolls.

Texas Roadhouse is on the agenda because they are contributing to our Wounded Vets who had a terrible accident the other day.

Don’t forget to go to Todd B. Freese to read Todd’s blog about being a teacher.

Todd goes to a workshop about the Bill of Rights and religion and encourages you to make sure you take time to sharpen your saw by attending events that help you become better at whatever you do.

Todd encourages you to plan your year next year by using S.M.A.R.T. goals and by all means start now.  By starting now you will get a jump on next year.  And perhaps we need to look in the mirror first before we complain about others.  Start a new you, you don’t have to do the same thing, checkout this podcast for help.

And Todd makes a list of the things he is thankful for, you should do it too, it is great.

In the church section Todd talks about taking more personal responsibility in the Radical experiment.  Sometimes the biggest problem is you!  Messiah’s Cozy Coffee House wasn’t a huge hit, but it was fun nonetheless. If you missed it, you missed a hoot as we say in Texas.  Christmas dinner theater is next.

Todd wants to see four movies and is reading a good book:

Book by Vince Flynn – Memorial Day.

I have three books on my coffee table right now.  I plan to read each one to find more purpose in my life. Each is one that represents three of the four core areas of life:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • Spiritual
The three books are:

Well, maybe the Dave Ramsey book isn’t directly related to and area, but it is a sub area. After all the area of finances is what drives most Americans.  After all, we spend four years in college to earn a degree to earn some money.  And most of don’t handle it very well once we get it.  This book teaches us how to handle money better, so I am re-reading it.

As for the other two books: Radical and Body For Life, are books that deal directly with Spiritual and Physical realms of life.  I did the Body for Life years ago and had remarkable results.  I am not feeling great physically, so I think it is time to jump start my system.  I took my blood pressure tonight, and it is too high.  I have gained some weight and it is time to get serious.

As for the book Radical, well I started reading it and quit, why?  Too challenging to me at the time.  I am in a dry place, spiritually speaking, so it is time to shake up my spiritual system too.

Where are you in these areas of your life?  Could you use a jump start?  Find a book, a system or create your own and shake it up.  If you don’t do it for yourself no one else will.  So here I go, I am eager to see what the future brings.  Come with me and see what you can do to change your life and gain more purpose in your life.

In today’s show we talk about several topics, where I have been and what I have been doing during my hiatus. I have started a new podcast with my wife. The link is in the bottom in the show notes.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Show Notes:

I took several trips, including three camping trips, one to Schlitterbahn (world’s biggest waterpark) Lena, Illinois by way of Chicago – TWICE, and Houston on at least three occasions. I was busy and thus the reason for few podcasts.

Is it possible to have too many things going on? I talk about four major areas of life:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Mental
  • Spiritual
Today I talk about a subcategory of the above, career.  I discuss how I found my purpose in teaching.  Teaching is tough in today’s climate with testing and apathy.  How do you stand out?  I found a different job, but didn’t take it in the end, find out why. Part of the reason is to become good or excellent at what I do.  To do that, time is needed and you can’t do everything.  I discovered three reasons why focusing in on the few things in life help make you better:
  • More Time
  • Less Stress
  • Renewed Interest
I am trying to find connection in all things in my life so that I can focus on my purpose.  I have tied my life together so I can be more effective in all areas of my life.  One area I want more focus on is church and my job there.  Spoke today with our pastor about modernists and post moderns, interesting discussion.
We also talk about the modernists/post-modernists and how they are affected and how they effect the places they work and participate it. e.g. the church and our educational institutions.  It is difficult to work in these environments in today’s world. Todd has a heart for ministry and can help you if you are in the ministry.  Fill out this form and let’s get started.

Without a doubt my worst job was as a car salesman. Now don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t as bad as some other jobs I have had in regards to physicality. But it was such a bad fit for me. Why? Because it went against all of my core beliefs and core of who I was. Not all car dealers run their stores the way this one did, but many did and this is why car salesman have a bad reputation to this day.

I was told that I knew the customer was lying if I could see their lips moving. Ironically, the same is said for car salesman, which of course leads to an adversarial relationship. I hated the idea of not being truthful. I was told, “This is how it is done” so I was supposed to go along with it. I didn’t and the result was I sold one ar in thirty days which led to my rather abrupt departure from my career as a car salesman. I awoke one morning and announced to Melissa, “I am retiring from the car business today” Continue Reading…
